Waste treatment

When Avdiivka Coke cleans the equipment at its chemical shops, residues from resinous substances produce harmful waste. This waste is recycled at a specialist waste-management company.

Avdiivka Coke’s coal preparation shop generates coal-washing waste, or tailings, during the production process. Tailings cannot be stored in a sludge collector under the current special water use permit. This waste is sold to companies that repurpose it.

Azovstal’s production process creates a by-product, slag, which it stores in special facilities called heaps. It uses a system made by AMCOM to extract the scrap metal from these slag heaps and then further processes it at the BOF shop. The project is part of Mariupol’s environmental protection and improvement programme for 2012-20.

BOF slag is used in the blast-furnace process to reduce the volumes of steelmaking slag in storage. The project has been under way since 2008.
