Depending on the system of standards used, the definition of plate is:
- Steel plate thickness 3mm or above (up to 250 mm) as per European Standards (EN 10025 and EN 10029)
- Steel plate sizes 4 mm thick or above as per CIS standards (GOST 14637, GOST 1577, DSTU 7808 / GOST 4041, etc.)
Quarto plates are mainly rolled at reversing mills (it is possible to cut to length from strips).
The largest consumer industries include shipbuilding, construction, machine building and large-diameter pipe manufacturing, among others.
Construction of bridges and other structures
Steel plates are mainly used in this industry for the fabrication of steel structures:
- I-beams, welded box-section columns and other support profiles that are made by cutting and welding elements from steel plates;
- Building floorings and elements of the superstructure of bridges, trestles and galleries;
- Medium- and large-diameter pipes that can be used both for utility lines (pipelines, chimney stacks, cabling, etc.) and as supports for structures and bridges.
Product: carbon and low-alloy steel plates
Requirements: weldability, high strength and viscosity, crack resistance (also at negative temperatures) and resistance against atmospheric corrosion for some applications
Technical standards and regulations: ASTM A36, A283/285, A588, A709/A709M, EN 10025, IS 2062, GOST 6713, GOST 27772, etc, including steel products with improved atmospheric corrosion resistance and high-strength steel products
Delivery conditions: hot-rolled, normalised, ТМСР, Q&T
Shipbuilding
Quarto plates are mainly used in this industry to manufacture ship hulls (bottom, deck, floors and bulkheads) and elements of offshore platforms and structures.
Product: low-alloy steel plates
Requirements: high strength, low-temperature viscosity, corrosion resistance and weldability (low-carbon equivalent)
Technical standards and regulations: shipping registers (ABS, DNV, GL, NKK, LR, BV, RR, IRS, etc.) and state standards for shipbuilding steel
Delivery conditions: hot-rolled, normalised, ТМСР, Q&T
Machine building
Plates are widely used in machine building sectors:
- To manufacture heavy underground and land machinery (casings, housings, high-stressed components for mining, road and handling machines, wear plates, crane jibs, etc.);
- To manufacture agricultural machinery components (ploughs, blades, harrows and parts of seeding machines);
- To manufacture components for cargo and passenger transport (load-carrying elements);
- Machine tool engineering and heavy engineering (bodies and housings of wood and metal working machines, parts and components of equipment for metallurgical, chemical and other operations).
Product: carbon, low-alloy, alloy plates and high-strength plates
Requirements: high strength, abrasion resistance and impact resistance
Technical standards and regulations: DIN 17200, EN 10083, ASTM A514/A514M, GOST 14959, etc.
Delivery conditions: hot-rolled, normalised, ТМСР, Q&T
Large-diameter pipe manufacturing
Large-diameter pipes (LDP) are sized from 480 mm in diameter and larger.
Plates are used to produce longitudinally welded LDP (single seam or double seam).
Product: low-alloy, alloy high-strength plates
Requirements: high strength and impact toughness (also at negative temperatures), corrosion resistance, guaranteed strength through plate thickness (Z-test), etc.
Technical standards and regulations: API standards, EN 10208, consumer technical requirements, etc.
Delivery conditions: normalised, ТМСР, Q&T
