The first tram has already arrived in Kamianske and will soon begin carrying passengers on route no. 1. By the end of this year, the city will receive another six trams, followed by 11 more in 2027. The new vehicles will operate on all four tram routes in Kamianske. In addition to Metinvest, procurement of the new trams has been co-financed by the European Investment Bank and the city budget.
Kamianske Mayor Andrii Bilousov said: “I am sincerely grateful to our reliable partner, Metinvest Group, for co-financing this project. As around 20 trams operate on the city’s routes every day, the project will enable us to modernise 85% of the fleet by 2027. Trams are the primary and most environmentally friendly means of public transport in our industrial city. Every year, we transport around 10 million passengers, 70% of whom are concessionary travellers. As such, introducing new accessible trams is of tremendous social importance for the entire community.”
What will change for passengers
The new trams are energy-efficient, low-floor vehicles equipped with air conditioning, CCTV cameras and fold-out access ramps. This will make journeys more comfortable for all passengers, particularly people with disabilities and other passengers with reduced mobility.
Olha Afanasieva, head of Operations at Transport, a Kamianske municipal enterprise, said: “The tram offers significant advantages for people with special needs, as it is equipped with a fold-out access ramp at the second door. The passenger compartment is fitted with safety belts. Overall, the vehicle meets the highest safety standards.”
Why this matters
The arrival of the new tram marks a significant milestone for Kamianske, as it is the first new one delivered to the city in two years. The vehicle was manufactured by the Ukrainian company Tatra-Yug. While the project had to be suspended following a Russian missile strike on the manufacturer’s facilities, the company has since resumed operations and returned to fulfilling the order.
This project not only helps to modernise the city’s transport infrastructure, but also supports Ukrainian industrial manufacturing, which continues to operate despite the war.
Oleksandr Tretiakov, chief executive officer of Kamet Steel, said: “Kamianske is home to thousands of Kamet Steel employees and their families. We are therefore pleased to contribute to the renewal of the city’s public electric transport. Metinvest has already allocated more than UAH50 million to this project. It is our contribution to improving residents’ quality of life and supporting the development of Kamianske. Even during the war, we remain committed to supporting communities and investing in the future, because strong communities make a strong Ukraine.”
Metinvest supports projects of vital importance to the community under a memorandum of cooperation with Kamianske City Council. In 2025, the Group invested UAH70 million in developing Kamianske’s social infrastructure. In particular, the funding was allocated to the reconstruction of hospitals nos. 9 and 7, the Emergency Medical Hospital and Primary Healthcare Centre no. 3.
